Cyclopentolate

Indications

• pediatric eye examinations

  • sed to stop the eye focusing at near distance

  • enabling the optometrist, ophthalmologist or orthoptist to obtain a more accurate reading of the focusing power of the eyes

Administration/Absorption

• eye drops: Cyclopentolate 0.5% and 1.0%

• take around 30 minutes to work

Distribution

Mechanism

• parasympatholytic anticholinergic

• same class as atropine and scopolamine

• Blocks muscarinic receptors in the muscles of the eye

  • blocks the responses of the sphincter muscle of the iris and the accommodative muscle of the ciliary body to stimulation by acetylcholine. ^{01}

• Dilation of the pupil (mydriasis) and paralysis of accommodation (cycloplegia) result

Excretion

• around 24 hours to wear off
