EBV rash

    • Patients with infectious mononucleosis are sometimes misdiagnosed with a streptococcal pharyngitis

      • Classical clinical triad of fever, pharyngitis and adenopathy looks similar

    • May be given beta lactam antibiotics

      • 80–90% of patients will then develop a red, diffuse rash

    • Rash is often assumed to be a penicillin allergy

Somatic symptoms in depression

    • Vague aches and pain are often the presenting symptoms of depression

    • Symptoms include:

      • Chronic joint pain

      • Limb pain

      • Back pain

      • Gastrointestinal problems

      • Tiredness

      • Sleep disturbances

      • Psychomotor activity changes

      • Appetite changes

Notes

    • A cecal mass (tumour etc) obstructing the lumen of the appendix can cause appendicitis
